On April 22, 2024, the Ministry of Industry of Thailand issued a new standard on Safety Standard for Portable Sealed Secondary Lithium Batteries and Cells Containing Alkaline or Other Non-acidic Electrolytes. The standard number is TIS 62133 Part 2-2565, which adopts IEC 62133-2 Edition 1.1 (2021 edition).

The test standard currently used for portable battery products is TIS 2217:2548. The differences between TIS 2217:2548 and the newly promulgated standard TIS 62133 Part 2-2565 are as follows:

Although the standard has been published on the TISI website and in the Royal Gazette of Thailand, manufacturers are still concerned about issues such as when the standard will be implemented and how the battery product information registered with the new standard will be reflected on the certificate, which still requires TISI to further announce relevant regulations.

According to MCM’s TISI project experience, the transition period from the old standard to the new standard is generally 180 days, no more than 1 year, and the application mode is a new application. It is speculated that the reason why the regulations are not made public may be related to the insufficient number of local recognized testing laboratories and the fact that the Particular Requirement for batteries has not been issued.

MCM continues to output reliable regulatory and standard information on Thailand TISI certification.
