Background:
IEEE released IEC 1725-2021 Standard for Rechargeable Batteries for Mobile Phones. CTIA Certifications Battery Compliance Scheme always regards IEEE 1725 as reference standard. After IEEE 1725-2021 released, CTIA establish a working group to discuss IEE 1725-2021 and form their own standard based on it. The working group listened suggestions from labs and manufacturers of batteries, mobile phones, devices, adapters, etc. and hold the first CRD draft discussion meeting. As CATL and a member of CTIA certifications battery scheme working group, MCM raise our advice and attend the meeting.
Agreed Suggestions in the First Meeting
After three days meeting the working group reaches agreement for the following items:
1. For cells with laminating package, there shall be adequate insulation to prevent shorting through of laminate foil packaging.
2. Further explanation of evaluating cells separator performance.
3. Add a picture to show the position (in the center) of penetrating the pouch cell.
4. The dimension of battery compartment of devices will be more detailed in the new standard.
5. Will add USB-C adapter (9V/5V) data which support fast charging.
6. Amendment of CRD number.
The meeting also answers the question that if batteries pass the test when samples fail after 10 minutes keeping in chamber of 130℃ to 150℃. The performance after 10 min test will not be considered as proof of evaluation, therefore they will pass only if they pass the 10 min test. Most of other safety testing standards have similar testing items, but there’s no explanation if the failure after testing period will influence. The CRD meeting gives us a reference.
Futher discussion items:
1. In IEE 1725-2021 there is no high temperature cycling external shorting test, but for some aged batteries it is necessary to conduct such tests to check material performance. It will be a further discussion if this testing will be kept or not.
2. The adaptor picture in the annex was suggested to be replaced with a more representative one, but the meeting did not reach an agreement. The issue will be discussed in the next meeting.
What’s Going Next
The next meeting will be held on August 17th to 19th in this year. MCM will continue to attend the meeting and upgrade the latest news. For the further-discussion items above, if you have any idea or suggestions, you are welcomed to tell our personnel. We will collect your ideas and put them on the meeting.
