Background
Last month the International Air Transport Association released the latest DGR 64TH, which will be implemented on January 1st, 2023. In the terms PI 965 & 968, which is about lithium-ion battery packing instruction, it requires prepared in accordance with Section IB must be capable of 3 m stack.
Stack Testing Norm
- Objects: Package in accordance with PI 965 & PI968 IB.
- Numbers of Samples: 3 (containing packages of different design and different manufacturer)
- Requirement: The surface of a package will get a force, which equals to the stress of the same packages that will be stacked at least 3m high, and keep for 24 hours.
- Procedure:
1.Check the appearance of packages and make sure there’s no broken.
2.Check the height of package and confirm the number (n) of packages needed for stacking 3 meters high.
3.Calculate the mass of stressing packages (n-1) * m (m equals to the mass of one package, unit: kg) to get the stressing force.
4.Put the package on the center of the platform of instrument. Set the F and testing time. Activate the testing equipment.
5.After 24 hours, check the package and record the result.
- Acceptance Criteria: Samples shall not leakage. Any testing samples cannot have changes that may cause any negative impact, or deformation causing less strength or unstableness. That means cartons cannot be broken, and the cells and batteries cannot be broken or deformed

Notice
The size of cartons is critical for testing. With appropriate size, cells and batteries fulfilled in the cartons can pass the test more easily.
